Well, it all has to do with one person. Actually, no, that's not quite right. It has to do with one idea. An idea so vile, so pernicious, and so destructive that tens of millions of humans have died from it - and that's just in the past 100 years.

A Hammer is a Tool, and so is DHH

People have all kinds of names for this idea. To some, it is xenophobia. Others, hate. Racism. Homophobia. Transphobia. Misogyny. Bigotry. White Supremacy. White Nationalism. These are all shards of the same foul philosophy.

Unfortunately, the shards of that idea also act as a tool. Hate is a tool that can be leveraged to build a following and gain power.

I'm sure we can all name a few folks who have risen to power and prominence on this manufactured wave. We can probably also all name a few folks who have already obtained power, and who have consciously chosen to apply that power to spreading hate (JK).

All that to say: Omacom Foundation and Omarchy are, in no small way, the product of one such person who is pursuing that strategy of promoting a hateful ideology as a way to become more powerful.

Supporting the Foundation, supporting the software, is inseparable from supporting the person at the core of it. Perhaps that could change in the future, in much the same way that supporting the FSF or OSI has -- at times -- been possible to separate from support of Richard M Stallman or Eric S Raymond. But for now, it should be considered a 1:1 transitive property.

If you give money to Omacom Foundation, you are empowering the person at the centre. Why would you want to do that?

So I was pondering all this whilst walking to the store a couple of days ago, and out of the blue, I received an email from 1Password. Funny, considering I had already been thinking of emailing them to complain about this.

It was about how they are ending support for 1Password 7, the final release of their product to offer "Local-Only" vaults, and that everyone needs to move to 1Password 8 by 2027. Having advance notice of this is great, a good communication plan on their part. I've been putting off the 1pw8 upgrade for quite some time - not because I use local vaults, but because of what I mentioned in the first paragraph (wishing they'd made different tech and corporate decisions).

In other words, they had rather unfortunate timing - because now, instead of composing a well-rounded letter for them to ignore, I was compelled to dash off a snarky jab of an email in reply:

"Hey, how about you stop donating money to Omarchy/DHH instead of bothering me about taking away functionality?"

I mean, I'm a nobody - I haven't ridden a wave of hate-mongering to prominence, nor have I created an open source project anywhere near as influential as Rails - so I didn't expect anything other than a canned response. Nevertheless, I replied.

I agree with and appreciate 1password's support for Open Source. I know you've benefited greatly from that ecosystem as part of the foundation of your company, so it is good to give back to the community. I myself have been developing open source code for over 20 years, yet I must point out that I haven't once written a blog post featuring racism, islamophobia, or White Nationalist tropes and dog whistles. Maybe that's because I'm a PHP developer, and DHH is a Ruby developer? That seems unlikely, though.

Tell me: What is endorsement? What does 1Password view as endorsement, vs not-endorsement? What is the difference, philosophically speaking, between Patronage and Endorsement?

When you donate to a foundation, you generally don't control where the money goes. When you donate to a foundation that is championed by someone like DHH, you help money go to him. You help power go to him, too. How is that not an endorsement? You'll have to explain it to me again, because I'm not seeing how your words match your actions.

DHH has embedded himself inseparably from Omacom Foundation. The more money that flows into it, the more power he has to inflict his whims on the world.

On top of that, the other contributors read like a who's-who of what's rotten in technology in 2026. Your contribution, while a drop in the bucket compared to theirs, raises the apparent value of their contribution. They are a tight-knit echo chamber of empty ideas, yet your contribution can be seen as legitimizing their ideas. An endorsement. A choice to sacrifice a portion of your company's good will for whatever gains you might realize from supporting their cabal. (Although, to be fair to both Michael Dell & Framework, they at least have a stake in the state of Linux Distributions. I don't see why 1pw would need to gain influence in that market segment.)

Either you made the choice to lend your credibility to a White Nationalist, or you saw a bandwagon with some familiar names attached & jumped on, hoping to gain access and influence.

Anyway. I haven't received a reply. I don't expect one, really. People much more influential than I will always take priority. That's what influence is. Plus, all I asked for is for them to "do better" - I didn't threaten to quit, I didn't tell them to stop the funding (though obviously I heavily implied it).

The Verge, in the article linked above in Exhibit B, received a response from the VP who authorized and/or pushed for the payment. It was a tepid, rationalizing, milquetoast attempt at woe-is-me, I-was-just-trying-to-do-good, why-is-everyone-so-mad, you-should-be-better-at-separating-the-artist-from-the-art, etc, etc, crisis management BS. The journalist rightfully and immediately juxtaposed the feeble argument with a direct quote from one of DHH's recent blog posts in which he lays bare his ideals.

So where does that leave me?

It leaves me exhausted. I am so incredibly tired of this world, these people, and this industry.
